Vinyl Polysiloxane – VPS (e.g. 3M™ Imprint™ SBR Occlusal Registration Material)
Advantages
Accurate
Dimensionally stable (will not distort during transportation to dental laboratory)
Very rigid final set (for accurate articulation)
Automix (mess free and easy to use)
Easy to disinfect (without fear of distortion)
No taste or odor
No tray required
Adequate working time/fast set time
Disadvantages
Sensitive to contaminants (the material may not set completely if it comes in contact with acrylic and methacrylate residues, latex rubber and sulfur compounds)
Some cartridges are susceptible to plugging
Cost
Wax (e.g. Base Plate Wax, A Variety of Manufacturers)
Advantages
Inexpensive
Disadvantages
The registration may distort or melt during transportation to the dental laboratory. Distortion of the record may result in incorrectly mounted casts. The final crown or bridge may then require considerable occlusal adjustment
Hard waxes need to be heated to be soft enough to manipulate
Unreliable handling (dependent on temperature)
